Objective: Organosiloxanes are prevalent in personal care products (PCPs) due to the desired properties they impart in the usage and application of such products. However, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has recently published restriction proposals on the amount of two cyclic siloxanes, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D5), allowed in wash off products such as shampoos and conditioners which are discharged down the drain during consumer use. This legislation will require that reliable analytical methods are available for manufacturers and government agencies to use in documenting compliance with the restrictions.

A gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) method for analysis of D4, D5, and D6 cyclic siloxanes in silicone emulsions is described. Sample preparation involves breaking the emulsion with methanol and hexanes, and then analyzing the hexanes phase after derivatization with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). Silylation is performed to reduce the potential for formation of cyclic siloxanes during the course of the GC analysis.

Background: There are reports of rare adverse effects of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, including infections, malignancies, and induction of autoimmune conditions. Intriguing, are cases of induction or exacerbation of psoriasis in conjunction with TNF inhibitor therapy, given that they are approved for treatment of the same condition.

Objective: Published cases of psoriasis occurring during anti-TNF therapy were analyzed, including overviews of proposed etiologies and treatment recommendations.
