Menopausal women may experience symptoms of depression, sometimes even progressing clinical depression requiring treatment to improve quality of life. While varying levels of estrogen in perimenopause may contribute to an increased biological vulnerability to mood disturbances, the effectiveness of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in the relief of depressive symptoms remains controversial. Menopausal depression has a complex, multifactorial etiology, that has limited the identification of optimal treatment strategies for the management of this psychiatric complaint.

Article Synopsis
  • Prolame, a synthetic estrogen, shows promise as a safer alternative by providing antidepressant and anxiolytic effects in ovariectomized young adult rats, but its efficacy in simulating menopause conditions in older rats is unclear.
  • In a study, prolame and traditional estrogen were administered to middle-aged female rats, revealing that prolame retained its beneficial effects in ovariectomized rats while traditional estrogen's effects were not observed in intact middle-aged rats, suggesting prolame could be a favorable EHRT option with fewer side effects.

Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is an effective treatment for symptoms associated with climacteric and depression some women experience during perimenopause and menopause. The antidepressant-like effects of ERT may depend on the type of estrogen, age, and time when restitution is initiated after hormonal decline. Prolame is a synthetic steroid with estrogenic and antidepressant-like effects that may produce fewer adverse effects.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the use of ripe mango as a source of energy in an integral diet consisting of regional products for fattening lambs. Twenty-seven Creole lambs were used and given a 10-day period to adapt to the diet. Three treatments were evaluated: T1 = 40% mango; T2 = 50% mango; and T3 = control diet.
