Post-stroke visual impairment (PSVI) affects more than 60% of the people who have a stroke but visual function is not routinely assessed in most stroke units. Recent high-quality research in this field has produced evidence-based assessment and management practices for PSVI. Orthoptists have integrated into the stroke care team in the United Kingdom (UK) to provide this valuable service.

Background And Purpose: Spasm of the near reflex (SNR) can be a variable, unpredictable condition. There is no standard management strategy. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the pertinent information from a literature review to better identify, explain, and manage this condition.

Casting Protocols Following BoNT-A Injections to Treat Spastic Hypertonia of the Triceps Surae in Children with Cerebral Palsy and Equinus Gait: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Aim: To study the effects of single versus serial casting post-Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) injections on hypoextensibility of triceps surae in children, 2-7 years old, with cerebral palsy and equinus gait.

Methods: A randomized, stratified, parallel, two-group trial was conducted at a pediatric health center with assessments at baseline, precast, postcast and, 1-, 2-, and 6-month follow-ups. One week following BoNT-A injections into triceps surae muscle, a single below-knee cast (n = 10) or 3 serial casts (n = 10) were applied for 3 weeks.

Extension type II pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures: a radiographic outcomes study of closed reduction and cast immobilization.

Background: The treatment of Gartland type II pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures remains controversial. Some argue that closed reduction and cast immobilization is sufficient to treat these fractures, whereas others advocate closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. The purpose of this radiographic outcomes study was to determine whether closed reduction and cast immobilization could successfully obtain and maintain acceptable reduction of extension type II supracondylar humerus fractures.
