Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of a new 3D ultrasound (3D-US) technique for measuring muscle volume in older adults, particularly in relation to sarcopenia, a condition characterized by muscle loss.
  • - Researchers found that 3D-US measurements demonstrated better concordance with total appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) compared to traditional 2D ultrasound (2D-US), with high reliability in 3D-US measurements.
  • - The results suggest that using 3D-US can offer significant advantages in assessing muscle volume and strength, supporting its potential as a reliable tool in geriatric rehabilitation settings.

A quality assurance programme for the tissue donation process was launched in Andalusia in 2020 to facilitate the integration of tissue donation into end-of-life care, and to respond to the growing need for human tissue for therapeutic purposes. The results of this programme are presented here. After identifying the hospital departments in which to intensify the detection of tissue donors, expanding training activities and designing a specific data collection system for possible tissue donors who do not donate their tissues, the results of the donation activity were quantified and the causes of non-donation were analysed by applying the critical pathway for deceased tissue donation methodology.

Freehand 3D ultrasound (3D-US) is a promising technique for measuring muscle volume but it requires gel pads or water tanks to limit probe compression on the skin which makes it hard to use in clinical applications. Our objectives were to measure the effect of different compressions on muscle volume in order to assess the clinical applicability of a minimal compression method for lower limb muscles. 4 muscles of the lower limb on 15 healthy volunteers were scanned with a new commercial freehand 3D-US setup accessible to clinical experimentators.

Background And Objectives: Since the advent of AIDS, men who have sex with men (MSM) have often been deferred from blood donation. In France, quarantine plasma donation by MSM donors with the same deferral rules as for other donors was introduced in July 2016 and continued up to March 2022. At this time, MSM-specific deferral criteria were lifted for all blood or plasma donation.

Background: COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) contains neutralising anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies that may be useful as COVID-19 passive immunotherapy in patients at risk of developing severe disease. Such plasma from convalescent patients may also have additional immune-modulatory properties when transfused to COVID-19 patients.

Methods: CCP (n = 766) was compared to non-convalescent control plasma (n = 166) for soluble inflammatory markers, ex-vivo inflammatory bioactivity on endothelial cells, neutralising auto-Abs to type I IFNs and reported adverse events in the recipients.
