Aims: The mortality rate for -COVID-19 infection varies significantly depending on age and comorbidities but remains high in hospitalized patients overall. Several retrospective studies have identified patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) to be at increased risk. The objective of this study was to study in-hospital outcomes of ESKD patients at an academic medical center and identify characteristics that place them at a higher risk for in-hospital mortality.

SUMMARY Suppression subtractive hybridization was used to isolate the genes which are specifically up-regulated in the biotrophic phase of the incompatible interaction between a potato genotype, 1512 c(16), containing the resistance gene R2, and a Phytophthora infestans isolate containing the avirulence gene Avr2. Eight cDNAs were up-regulated in the biotrophic phase of the incompatible interaction. Seven of these were also up-regulated in the compatible interaction, but not until late in the necrotrophic phase.

For studies of differential gene expression in prokaryotes, methods for synthesizing representative cDNA populations are required. Here, a technique is described for the synthesis of cDNA from the potato pathogens Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) and Erwinia carotovora subsp.

A potato cysteine protease (cyp) cDNA expressed at an early stage of an incompatible interaction with Phytophthora infestans was isolated. Both the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences are highly homologous to those of a tomato cysteine protease, CYP1. Striking protein similarity to all known cathepsins in animals, particularly cathepsin K, was also observed.

An aminotransferase which catalyzes the final step in methionine recycling from methylthioadenosine, the conversion of alpha-ketomethiobutyrate to methionine, has been purified from Klebsiella pneumoniae and characterized. The enzyme was found to be a homodimer of 45-kDa subunits, and it catalyzed methionine formation primarily using aromatic amino acids and glutamate as the amino donors. Histidine, leucine, asparagine, and arginine were also functional amino donors but to a lesser extent.
