Farnesyl pyrophosphate derivatives bearing an additional oxygen atom at position 5 proved to be very suitable for expanding the substrate promiscuity of sesquiterpene synthases (STSs) and the formation of new oxygenated terpenoids. Insertion of an oxygen atom in position 9, however, caused larger restraints that led to restricted acceptance by STSs. In order to reduce some of the proposed restrictions, two FPP-ether derivatives with altered substitution pattern around the terminal olefinic double bond were designed.

A 26-year-old male international soccer player suffered a West Point Ankle Grade III syndesmosis injury leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Following surgical stabilization, the player completed an eleven-phase return-to-performance (RTPerf) pathway designed to ensure rapid and safe return to play. The pathway employs distinct phases that incorporate clinical, psychological, and sports-specific criteria to inform decision making throughout the process.

Background: Spinometry is a radiation-free method to three-dimensional spine imaging that provides additional information about the functional gait patterns related to the pelvis and lower extremities. This radiation-free technology uses the surface topography of the trunk to analyze surface asymmetry and identify bony landmarks, thereby aiding the assessment of spinal deformity and supporting long-term treatment regimes. Especially reliable dynamic spinometric data for spine and pelvis are necessary to evaluate the management of non-specific back pain.

Article Synopsis
  • A new farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) derivative has a shifted double bond and is converted by protoilludene synthase and viridiflorene synthase, resulting in a novel germacrene derivative named "germacrene F."
  • The modification in the olefinic double bond changes the initial cyclization process from a 1→11 to a 1→10 mechanism.
  • Molecular docking studies provide insight into Omp7's behavior, while temperature-dependent NMR and NOE studies reveal that germacrene F has a preferred mirror-symmetric conformation in its cyclodecane ring.

Background: Global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global myocardial work index (GWI) allow early detection of subclinical changes in left ventricular (LV) systolic function. The aim of the study was to investigate the immediate effects of maximum physical exercise by different exercise testing methods on early post exercise LV deformation parameters in competitive athletes and to analyze their correlation with cardiopulmonary exercise capacity.

Methods: To reach maximum physical exercise, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed by semi-recumbent ergometer in competitive handball players (n = 13) and by treadmill testing in competitive football players (n = 19).
