"It's not lupus". A placental site trophoblastic tumor presenting as a lupus-like paraneoplastic syndrome. A grand round case.

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare subtype of gestational trophoblastic disease. Association of PSTT and nephrotic syndrome is exceedingly rare and has been described in 8 cases thus far. In all cases hysterectomy was performed within months after onset of symptoms, leading to immediate remission of nephrotic syndrome, except for one patient who died of complications of PSTT.

Type 3 deiodinase is highly expressed in infiltrating neutrophilic granulocytes in response to acute bacterial infection.

Background: Macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) play an important role in the first line of defense against bacteria by infiltrating the infected organ in order to clear the harmful pathogen. Our earlier studies showed that granulocytes express type 3 deiodinase (D3) when activated during a turpentine-induced abscess. We hypothesized that D3 expression by granulocytes may also occur during bacterial infection.

Distribution and expression of type VI collagen in photoaged skin.

Background: Several of the characteristic clinical features of photoaged skin, including wrinkling, are thought to be dependent on changes in the dermal matrix brought about by chronic sun exposure. Such changes include reductions in collagens I, III and VII, an increase in elastotic material in the reticular dermis and a marked reduction in the microfibrillar glycoprotein fibrillin.

Objectives: To examine whether type VI collagen, a microfibrillar collagen necessary for cell-cell and cell-matrix communication, is affected by the photoageing process.
