Background: Vertebral artery compression syndrome is a rare condition defined as the clinical presentation of dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, dysarthria, dysphagia, progressive or acute paralysis, hemisensory loss, and cervical myelopathy secondary to compression of the medulla and upper spinal cord by the vertebral artery.
Case Description: Here we describe a 57-year-old Mexican-American male with bulbar symptoms, positional vertigo, and diplopia. The patient's symptoms were managed through microsurgical decompression of the medulla utilizing a far lateral transcondylar approach.
Background: Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) is a type of sarcoma that arises from smooth muscle and generally presents in the abdomen. View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo understand how a bacterium ultimately succeeds or fails in adapting to a new host, it is essential to assess the temporal dynamics of its fitness over the course of colonization. Here, we introduce a human-derived commensal organism, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt), into the guts of germ-free mice to determine whether and how the genetic requirements for colonization shift over time. Combining a high-throughput functional genetics assay and transcriptomics, we find that gene usage changes drastically during the first days of colonization, shifting from high expression of amino acid biosynthesis genes to broad upregulation of diverse polysaccharide utilization loci.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe conserved complex of the Rad6 E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme and the Bre1 E3 ubiquitin ligase catalyzes histone H2B monoubiquitination (H2Bub1), which regulates chromatin dynamics during transcription and other nuclear processes. Here, we report a crystal structure of Rad6 and the non-RING domain N-terminal region of Bre1, which shows an asymmetric homodimer of Bre1 contacting a conserved loop on the Rad6 'backside'. This contact is distant from the Rad6 catalytic site and is the location of mutations that impair telomeric silencing in yeast.
