Article Synopsis
  • The analysis aimed to compare patient outcomes from two large cohorts in Europe and the USA who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to assess the effectiveness of knowledge exchange among cardiovascular surgery societies.
  • Data was collected from the European DuraGraft Registry (2,522 patients) and the US STS database (294,725 patients), with both groups undergoing CABG between 2016 and 2019, and factors were matched using propensity score models to ensure fair comparison of outcomes.
  • Key findings revealed different patient profiles, with European patients more likely to have left main disease and receive arterial grafts, while US patients tended to have more saphenous vein grafts; however, these differences in treatment approaches were

Objective: Cryoballoon ablation for pulmonary vein isolation is a time-efficient procedure that can alleviate stress on electrophysiology lab resources. This analysis modeled the impact of cryoballoon ablation on electrophysiology lab operation using data from Latin America.

Methods: Data from centers in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile of the were used as inputs for an electrophysiology lab efficiency simulation model.

Objective: Our institution recently implemented a virtual reality (VR) skills curriculum for general surgery residents using the SimNow simulator. Based on a content alignment study, we revised the curriculum to include only 20 of 33 VR tasks and we added 3 previously validated inanimate tasks. The purpose of this study was to establish expert-derived proficiency levels for all tasks and to evaluate the validity of the scoring for the VR tasks.

Importance: Robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomies with multiport robots have been described in the US since 2015; however, significant hurdles to multiport robotic surgery exist in breast surgery.

Objective: To demonstrate that the single-port da Vinci SP (Intuitive Surgical) robotic system is feasible in patients undergoing robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy (rNSM).

Design, Setting, And Participants: An initial case series of 20 patients at a large university hospital underwent bilateral single-port robotic nipple-sparing mastectomies (SPrNSM) with tissue expander reconstruction from February 1, 2020, through January 4, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the integration of genomic data across NHS laboratories in England and Wales, highlighting variations in data structure, quality, and ease of local assembly for cancer susceptibility gene testing.
  • A survey of 51 clinical scientists revealed significant differences in how variant data is transferred, formatted, and classified within Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) across the participating labs.
  • The findings indicate that current workflows are often inefficient and prone to errors due to their manual nature, suggesting that implementing recommended improvements could streamline data submission processes for better national and international collaboration.
