Hel308 helicases promote genome stability in archaea and are conserved in metazoans, where they are known as HELQ. Their helicase mechanism is well characterised, but it is unclear how they specifically contribute to genome stability in archaea. We show here that a highly conserved motif of Hel308/HELQ helicases (motif IVa, F/YHHAGL) modulates both DNA unwinding and a newly identified strand annealing function of archaeal Hel308.

Droplets impacting superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied due to their compelling scientific insights and important industrial applications. In these cases, the commonly reported impact regime was that of complete rebound. This impact regime strongly depends on the nature of the superhydrophobic surface.

Real-time and continuous closed-loop control of brain activity can, however, be achieved by pairing concurrent electrical recordings and optogenetics. Here we show that closed-loop optogenetic stimulation with excitatory opsins enables the precise manipulation of neural dynamics in brain slices from transgenic mice and in anaesthetized non-human primates.

Optogenetics is a promising area of current research, enabling optical stimulation of genetically-defined cell types without interfering with concurrent electrical recording for closed-loop control of neural activity. We are developing an open-source system to provide a platform for closed-loop optogenetic neuromodulation, incorporating custom integrated circuitry for recording and stimulation, real-time closed-loop algorithms running on a microcontroller and experimental control via a PC interface.
