Phacoemulsification is routinely performed with the patient lying supine on the surgical table with his or her head flat and facing the overhead microscope. This routine technique can be a challenge in medical conditions such as kyphosis, scoliosis, orthopnea, Meniere's disease, and CNS abnormality. Some cardiovascular and respiratory conditions make the patients breathless when they lie down, whereas other neurological and spinal problem patients are also equally uncomfortable.

A commercially available handheld spectroradiometer, the WISP-3, was assessed as a tool for monitoring freshwater cyanobacterial blooms for management purposes. Three small eutrophic urban ponds which displayed considerable within-pond and between-pond variability in water quality and cyanobacterial community composition were used as trial sites. On-board algorithms provide field measurements of phycocyanin (CPC) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) from surface reflectance spectra measured by the instrument.

An unusual bloom of Chrysosporum ovalisporum (basionym Aphanizomenon ovalisporum) occurred for the first time in the Murray River and distributary rivers in New South Wales, Australia, from mid-February to early June 2016. At its greatest extent, it contaminated a combined river length of ca. 2360 km.

A model is developed to describe the decay of seven insecticides on stored paddy rice, maize, sunflowers and peas, and is shown to be more precise than each of six literature models on pesticide decay. It relates residues (R), as a ratio of applied concentration (R(0)), to time after insecticide application (t), modifying the usual first-order kinetics equation lnR=lnR(0)-kt by assuming that the rate constant k has a mixture of values according to a gamma distribution with mean K. The resulting equation is lnR=lnR(0)-Kcln(1+t/c), where c is a constant determined empirically.

The principles and design of a Hadamard transform UV absorbance detector for liquid chromatography are outlined, and some spectra of aromatic compounds passing through its flow cell are presented. This approach could be valuable in providing a low-cost multi-wavelength detection method for liquid chromatography.
