Article Synopsis
  • Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) significantly impacts healthcare systems, with many patients facing lingering effects despite no visible structural damage.
  • Magnetoencephalography (MEG) offers a unique way to study neural function and identify mTBI through abnormal neural oscillations, potentially serving as a biomarker for detection and prognosis.
  • The study reveals that mTBI disrupts the coordination of neural network activity, affecting motor task performance, and highlights the use of advanced modeling techniques to understand these subtle yet impactful changes.

Background: The global incidence of traumatic brain injuries is rising, with at least 80% being classified as mild. These mild injuries are not visible on routine clinical imaging. The potential clinical role of a specific imaging biomarker be it diagnostic, prognostic or directing and monitoring progress of personalised treatment and rehabilitation has driven the exploration of several new neuroimaging modalities.
