A synapse is the junction across which a nerve impulse passes from an axon terminal to a neuron, muscle cell or gland cell. The functions and building molecules of the synapse are essential to almost all neurobiological processes. To describe synaptic structures and functions, we have developed Synapse Ontology (SynO), a hierarchical representation that includes 177 terms with hundreds of synonyms and branches up to eight levels deep.

Ontologies, such as the popular Gene Ontology (GO), provide a common controlled vocabulary for these types of automated analysis. Yet, while GO offers tremendous value, it also has certain limitations such as the lack of direct association with pathways.

Although multiple decision support systems have been built for physicians, efficient delivery of valid and complete medical knowledge remains an elusive goal. In this paper we describe a new project, the Stanford Health Information Network for Education (SHINE). SHINE unifies core medical resources in an intuitive interface to support clinical decision making.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe electric organ discharge (EOD) of several species of mormyrid fishes within the genus Brienomyrus is sexually dimorphic during the breeding season: the duration of the male's EOD is much longer than the duration of the female's (for a review see Hopkins, 1986). The mormyrid used here, Brienomyrus sp., exhibits similar alterations in the duration of the triphasic EOD after treatment with testosterone, as do other members of this genus (for reviews see Bass, 1986a,b).
