Dynamics of glucose metabolism after liver transplantation: prediabetes as a window of opportunity for patient survival and long-term kidney function.

Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a relevant complication following liver transplantation with profound impact on morbidity and mortality. To date, little is known about the evolution and dynamics of glucose metabolism and the impact of prediabetes in long-term follow-up. To address this issue, all consecutive adult liver transplant recipients (n = 429) from a European university hospital transplant center between 2007 and 2017 were analyzed retrospectively.

Risperidone in the treatment of schizophrenia: results of a study of patients from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Results of a subanalysis of data from the multinational risperidone trial (RIS-INT-2) are reported. Patients with chronic schizophrenia were treated with risperidone at 1 mg/day (n = 25), 4 mg/day (n = 27), 8 mg/day (n = 29), 12 mg/day (n = 31), or 16 mg/day (n = 29), or 10 mg/day of haloperidol for 8 weeks. According to the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total and subscale scores, improvements were noted in each treatment group from baseline to treatment endpoint.

Low plasma thyroid indices of depressed patients are attenuated by antidepressant drugs and influence treatment outcome.

Decreased turnover of thyroid indices and blunting of TSH release after TRH administration has been associated with depressive disorder. A further decrease in plasma thyroid hormone; during antidepressant treatment has been reported. However, the putative association between the plasma thyroid indices' concentration and response has not been addressed.

A controlled study of the efficacy and safety of mianserin and amitriptyline in depressive inpatients.

As with other second-generation antidepressants, the antidepressive efficacy of mianserin was investigated in double-blind control group studies, mostly under outpatient conditions. This study tested the antidepressive efficacy and safety of mianserin as compared to amitriptyline in a sample of 51 depressed inpatients suffering from major depression. No statistically significant difference was found with regard to the main efficacy outcome criterion, the HAMD.

[Validating rehabilitation after stroke].

Evaluation of therapeutic efficacy in neurologic rehabilitation is methodologically limited by the well established polypragmasia and the lack of untreated controls. Controversial discussion is generated by the following topics: superiority of specific therapy versus spontaneous recovery, higher efficacy of in-patient-setting versus out-patient-setting and the value of neurorehabilitation treatment in latency of more than 1 year after the event. To develop a practicable method for the evaluation of efficacy, we surveyed retrospectively 30 patients after stroke in a sequential study design on 4 scheduled visits: first admission to in-patient rehabilitation, discharge to out-patient treatment, admission and discharge of second in-patient rehabilitation.
