Unlabelled: Due high rates of unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion in young women in Latin America intrauterine contraception, by its great contraceptive efficacy, should be offered by the public services of health in a more generalized way. However, some negative prejudices prevail over the perception of its benefits. The aim of this article was to explore the most relevant myths around this contraceptive method in Latin America and make a review of the literature to allay the fears of their use by young and nulliparous women.

A phase III clinical study was carried out among 534 fertile Latin American women to evaluate cycle control, side effects, and contraceptive efficacy of a once-a-month combined injectable, Mesigyna, consisting of 50 mg norethisterone enanthate and 5 mg estradiol valerate. The pregnancy rate at 1 year was 0 per 100 woman-years for a total experience of 4688 woman-months. The overall discontinuation rate at one year was 17.
