Article Synopsis
  • Mumps virus (MuV) is still active globally despite high vaccination rates, and its early cellular targets in the body are unclear.
  • Researchers developed a GFP-tagged MuV strain to investigate which immune cells are most affected, finding that monocytes are particularly susceptible to infection.
  • In studies with mice and human cells, alveolar macrophages were identified as key targets for MuV, indicating their role in the virus's early pathogenesis and spread in the body.

Lethal COVID-19 outcomes are attributed to classic cytokine storm. We revisit this using RNA sequencing of nasopharyngeal and 40 autopsy samples from patients dying of SARS-CoV-2. Subsets of the 100 top-upregulated genes in nasal swabs are upregulated in the heart, lung, kidney, and liver, but not mediastinal lymph nodes.

Purpose: This study evaluated the performance of three machine learning (ML) algorithms-decision tree (DT), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and extreme gradient boosting (XGB)-in identifying regular athletes who suffered a knee injury several months to years prior. In addition, the contribution of psychological variables in addition to biomechanical ones in the classification performance of the ML algorithms was assessed, to better identify factors to get back to competitive sport with the lowest possible risk of new knee injury.

Methods: A cohort of 96 athletes, 36 with prior knee injuries, practicing an average of 5.

The aim of this study was to append a passive soft back exoskeleton to a validated musculoskeletal model and assess its effectiveness in reducing lumbar loads. Fifteen participants lifted a box, with and without wearing a CORFOR exoskeleton. A full body OpenSim model was used to estimate lumbar joint moments and reaction forces, as well as low back muscles forces.

When enzyme inhibition by either the product or excess substrate occurs, it is possible to determine the characteristic kinetic parameters based on [P]/t measurements, even when a large proportion of the substrate is converted. The advantages of various approaches are discussed. Most of them allow a good estimation of the V and K values.
