Enhancing cognitive control of our decisions: Making the most of humor during the IGT in females and males.

We studied the impact of humor on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) decision-making performance and the cognitive control exerted during this task, considering sex as a moderator, and examined whether cognitive control mediated the influence of humor on decision-making. Sixty participants (30 females) performed an extended version of the IGT (500 trials divided into 20 blocks). We randomly assigned them to either an experimental group (Humor Group; Hg; n = 30), where humorous videos were interspersed in the decision-making trials or a control group (Non-Humor Group; NHg; n = 30), where nonhumorous videos were interspersed in the decision-making trials.

EEG subject-dependent neurofeedback training selectively impairs declarative memories consolidation process.

The process of stabilization and storage of memories, known as consolidation, can be modulated by different interventions. Research has shown that self-regulation of brain activity through Neurofeedback (NFB) during the consolidation phase significantly impacts memory stabilization. While some studies have successfully modulated the consolidation phase using traditional EEG-based Neurofeedback (NFB) that focuses on general parameters, such as training a specific frequency band at particular electrodes, they often overlook the unique and complex neurodynamics that underlie each memory content in different individuals, potentially limiting the selective modulation of memories.

Clinical Characteristics of Necrotizing Enterocolitis Diagnosed by Independent Adjudication of Abdominal Radiographs, Laparotomy, or Autopsy in Preterm Infants in the "Connection Trial".

Objective:  Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) classically is diagnosed by radiographic demonstration of pneumatosis intestinalis/portal venous gas (PI/PVG). This study examines clinical characteristics of NEC confirmed by independent evaluation of abdominal radiographs, taken for clinical signs of NEC, or by pathologic findings at laparotomy or autopsy (confirmed NEC [cNEC]).

Study Design:  The investigated cohort included 1,382 extremely low birth weight (BW) infants (BW range: 500-1,000 g) with median 27 weeks (range: 23-32) gestational age (GA) at birth.

Need for Gastrostomy Tube in Periviable Infants.

Objective:  We sought to identify clinical and demographic factors associated with gastrostomy tube (g-tube) placement in periviable infants.

Study Design:  We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of live-born infants between 22 and 25 weeks' gestation. Infants not actively resuscitated and those with congenital anomalies were excluded from analysis.

Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction in Newborns.

Lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is a rare birth defect with a prevalence between 1 in 5,000 and 1 in 25,000 pregnancies. LUTO is one of the most common causes of congenital abnormalities of the renal tract. Several genetic conditions have been associated with LUTO.
