Ultracold Rare-Earth Magnetic Atoms with an Electric Dipole Moment.

We propose a new method to produce an electric and magnetic dipolar gas of ultracold dysprosium atoms. The pair of nearly degenerate energy levels of opposite parity, at 17513.33  cm^{-1} with electronic angular momentum J=10, and at 17514.

Saturated amplification of a collisionally pumped optical-field-ionization soft X-ray laser at 41.8 nm.

We report the first saturated amplification of an optical-field-ionization soft x-ray laser. The amplifying medium is generated by focusing a circularly polarized 330-mJ, 35-fs, 10-Hz Ti:sapphire laser system in a few-mm cell filled with xenon. A gain of 67 cm(-1) on the 4d(9)5p-4d(9)5d transition at 41.

Analysis of the (5d+5d6s)-5d6p Transition Arrays of Os VII and Ir VIII, and the 6s S-6p P Transitions of Ir IX.

The spectra of osmium and iridium were photographed in the 300 Å to 1600 Å region on a 3 m normal incidence spectrograph using a triggered spark source. The (5 + 56)-56 transition arrays of Os VII and Ir VIII were analyzed. All levels of these three configurations in both spectra have been established.

Energy Levels of Singly-Ionized Platinum.

The analysis of Pt II is extended by using accurate wavelength measurements by Sansonetti et al. Forty-three new even and 104 new odd levels have been found. The Slater-Condon parametric method is used for the interpretation of the 5, 56, and 56 low even configurations and the 5(7+6) high even configurations with root mean square deviations smaller than 80 cm.
