Evaluation of marine spatial planning requires fit for purpose monitoring strategies.

Marine spatial planning (MSP) has rapidly become the most widely used integrated, place-based management approach in the marine environment. Monitoring and evaluation of MSP is key to inform best practices, adaptive management and plan iteration. While standardised evaluation frameworks cannot be readily applied, accounting for evaluation essentials such as the definition of evaluation objectives, indicators and stakeholder engagement of stakeholders is a prerequisite for meaningful evaluation outcomes.

The diversity and evolution of ecological and environmental citizen science.

Citizen science-the involvement of volunteers in data collection, analysis and interpretation-simultaneously supports research and public engagement with science, and its profile is rapidly rising. Citizen science represents a diverse range of approaches, but until now this diversity has not been quantitatively explored. We conducted a systematic internet search and discovered 509 environmental and ecological citizen science projects.

Factors that shape seed mass evolution.

We used correlated divergence analysis to determine which factors have been most closely associated with changes in seed mass during seed plant evolution. We found that divergences in seed mass have been more consistently associated with divergences in growth form than with divergences in any other variable. This finding is consistent with the strong relationship between seed mass and growth form across present-day species and with the available data from the paleobotanical literature.

Direct milk excretion of Campylobacter jejuni in a dairy cow causing cases of human enteritis.

Consumption of milk contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni has been described as a cause of human enteritis. Although faecal contamination of milk with the organism has frequently been described, direct milk excretion of Campylobacter jejuni into milk has rarely been linked with cases of human infection. We describe the investigations undertaken following the isolation of Campylobacter jejuni from samples of unpasteurized milk prior to retail.
