Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between periodontitis (a serious gum infection) and various cardiometabolic and blood clotting factors in patients needing full mouth extraction compared to a control group.
  • Results showed that individuals with periodontitis had higher von Willebrand factor (VWF) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, but these factors didn't improve after extraction.
  • The research suggests that while VWF is associated with the severity of periodontitis, treating periodontitis may not significantly affect blood profiles in individuals without existing cardiometabolic disease.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with COVID-19 compared to other viral pneumonia cases, aiming to understand the variations in VTE risk.
  • It includes data from 70 studies on COVID-19, analyzing VTE prevalence in both ICU and ward settings, highlighting significant differences between screening and nonscreening approaches.
  • The findings reveal high heterogeneity in VTE risk for COVID-19, suggesting caution in interpreting these results due to potential publication bias related to sample size.

Trends of coagulation parameters during long-term treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) are unclear. We followed 40 male subjects living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Plasma levels of procoagulant parameters, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor and D-dimer, and anticoagulant parameter Protein S (PS), were measured before start and 3 months, 1 year, and 9 years after.

Background: Recurrence risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) is unclear.

Aim: To determine the recurrence risk of SLE-associated VTE overall and by presence of provoking factors and SLE flares.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients with first SLE-associated VTE who discontinued anticoagulation.

Objective: To investigate whether herpes zoster (HZ) was associated with subsequent increased risk of dementia diagnosis.

Methods: We conducted a historical cohort study using primary care electronic health records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink in the United Kingdom. Individuals with incident HZ aged ≥40 years from 2000 to 2017 were matched with up to four individuals without HZ by age, sex, primary care practise and calendar time.
