Patients with fatty acid oxidation disorders (FAODs) experience muscle symptoms due to impaired ATP metabolism and the toxicity of accumulated mitochondrial FAO substrates or intermediates, especially during catabolic states. A major issue is the absence of specific and sensible biomarkers to evaluate metabolic equilibrium. The relationship between cardiac output (Q) and oxygen consumption (VO) during incremental exercise (dQ/dVO) provides an indirect surrogate of mitochondrial function.

Objectives: Patients with inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) may require emergency hospital care to prevent life-threatening situations such as metabolic decompensation. To date, over one thousand different rare IMDs have been identified, which means that healthcare professionals (HCPs) initiating emergency treatment may not be familiar with these conditions. The objective of this initiative was to provide HCPs with practical guidance for the acute management of children and adults with IMDs who need emergency care, regardless of the underlying reason.

Monitoring of the French multicenter Asbestos-Related Disease Cohort (ARDCO), which ensures post-occupational medical surveillance of subjects having been exposed to asbestos, provides information on (1) the medico-legal steps taken following screening by computed tomography (CT) for benign thoracic diseases, and (2) recognition of OD as a causal factor in malignant diseases.
Methods: OD recognition - and possible compensation - was analyzed in July 2021 among 13,289 volunteers in the cohort recruited between 2003 and 2005.
Sulfur mustard (SM) is a highly potent alkylating vesicant agent and remains a relevant threat to both civilians and military personnel. The eyes are the most sensitive organ after airborne SM exposure, causing ocular injuries with no antidote or specific therapeutics available. In order to identify relevant biomarkers and to obtain a deeper understanding of the underlying biochemical events, we performed an untargeted metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry of plasma samples from New Zealand white rabbits ocularly exposed to vapors of SM.
