Case report of atypical osteonecrosis of the jaws: a clinical dilemma.

Osteonecrosis of the jaws is defined as exposed jawbone that persists for more than eight weeks. Treatment may be challenging and can adversely affect the patient's quality of life. We present a male patient who was referred to our department with areas of extensive osteonecrosis in the maxilla and mandible.

Incidence and patterns of mandibular fractures during a 5-year period in a London teaching hospital.

We retrospectively evaluated mandibular fractures in patients who presented to a London teaching hospital between June 2005 and May 2010. A total of 1261 patients sustained 1994 mandibular fractures (mean 1.6, range 1-5).

Differential relationship between neurological and cognitive dysfunction in first episode psychosis patients and in healthy individuals.

The minor neurological and cognitive deficits consistently reported in psychoses may reflect the same underlying brain dysfunction. Still, even in healthy individuals minor neurological abnormalities are associated with worse cognitive function. Therefore, establishing which neurological and cognitive deficits are specific to psychosis is essential to inform the pathophysiology of this disorder.

Relationship between mercury levels in blood and urine and complaints of chronic mercury toxicity from amalgam restorations.

Aim: To determine whether patients complaining of oral and medical symptoms perceived to be associated with chronic mercury toxicity have elevated mercury levels in their blood and urine.

Methods: The study group in this audit were 56 patients presenting to an oral medicine unit with complaints perceived to be related to chronic mercury toxicity. Their symptoms and co-morbidity were charted and mercury levels in blood and urine were biochemically tested by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Dental implants and squamous cell carcinoma in the at risk patient--report of three cases.

Osseointegrated dental implants are increasingly used in the rehabilitation of the dental patient. They have a particular role in dental rehabilitation following treatment for oral cancer. Data is presented that suggests that, in the at risk patient, squamous cell carcinoma may develop in association with dental implants.
