Extracorporeal life support as bridge to recovery in yew poisoning: case reports and literature review.

Aims: This short communication aims to review the treatment of cardiogenic shock in patients with yew poisoning based on two case reports from our institution, focusing on the use of extracorporeal life support (ECLS).

Methods And Results: We report two cases of Taxus baccata poisoning treated with ECLS at our institution and review the literature based on a search in PubMed and Google Scholar on the topic of yew poisoning and ECLS. All cases were combined for analysis of demographics, ECLS therapy, and outcome.

High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left dorsolateral cortex: EEG topography during waking and subsequent sleep.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a novel research tool in neurology and psychiatry. It is currently being evaluated as a conceivable alternative to electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of mood disorders. Eight healthy young (age range 21-25 years) right-handed men without sleep complaints participated in the study.

Mood effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of left prefrontal cortex in healthy volunteers.

This study investigated the effect of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF-rTMS) of the left prefrontal cortex (LPFC) on mood in a sham-controlled crossover design. Twenty-five healthy male subjects received HF-rTMS of the LPFC in real and sham conditions. Forty trains (frequency 20 Hz, stimulation intensity 100% of individual motor threshold, train duration 2 s, intertrain interval 28 s) were applied in each session.

Small cell carcinoma of the lung. Treatment in the community.

The results of nonprotocol treatment of 232 patients with small cell lung cancer seen by a group of community-based medical oncologists over a 13-year period were evaluated. Factors associated with improved survival also were assessed. The following patient characteristics significantly improved survival: limited stage of disease at diagnosis, treatment of extensive (but not limited) disease with regimens including etoposide and cisplatin, tumor resection, age younger than 70 years, radiation therapy to the chest, and female sex (extensive disease only).
