Mitochondrial optic atrophy-1 (OPA1) plays key roles in adapting mitochondrial structure to bioenergetic function. When transmembrane potential across the inner membrane (Δψ) is intact, long (L-OPA1) isoforms shape the inner membrane through membrane fusion and the formation of cristal junctions. When Δψ is lost, however, OPA1 is cleaved to short, inactive S-OPA1 isoforms by the OMA1 metalloprotease, disrupting mitochondrial structure and priming cellular stress responses such as apoptosis.

Rapid Transition from a High-Fat, High-Fructose to a Low-Fat, Low-Fructose Diet Reverses Gains in Bone Mass and Strength.

Purpose: Obesity is thought to negatively impact bone quality and strength despite improving bone mineral density. We hypothesized that 1) continuous consumption of a high-fat, high-sugar (HFS) diet would impair bone quality and strength, and 2) a change from an HFS diet to a low-fat, low-sugar (LFS) would reverse HFS-induced impairments to bone quality and strength.

Methods: Six-week-old male C57Bl/6 mice ( n = 10/group) with access to a running wheel were randomized to an LFS diet or an HFS diet with simulated sugar-sweetened beverages (20% fructose in place of regular drinking water) for 13 wk.

Financial Hardship After Traumatic Injury: Risk Factors and Drivers of Out-of-Pocket Health Expenses.

Background: Trauma-related disorders rank among the top five most costly medical conditions to the health care system. However, the impact of out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenses for traumatic conditions is not known. In this cross-sectional study, we use nationally representative data to investigate whether patients with a traumatic injury experienced financial hardship from OOP health expenses.

Engaged Environmental Science for Underserved Youth.

The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences has called for targeted efforts to engage underserved youth in environmental education programs that support environmental literacy and contribute to the development of a diverse workforce pipeline for environmental science-related occupations. Evidence suggests that career knowledge among low income and minority youth is more likely to be incompatible with post-secondary educational opportunities than other racial and ethnic groups. One approach to attenuating discordant college and career expectations among underserved youth is building networks for information sharing between secondary and post-secondary students.

Chronic pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) leads to lack of bone accrual, bone loss, and increased fractures. Presently there is no cure, and many IBD treatments incur negative side effects. We previously discovered treatment with exogenous irisin resolved inflammatory changes in the colon, gut lymphatics, and bone in a mild IBD rodent model.
