Objectives: To investigate the safety and efficacy outcomes of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in patients aged >80 years with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) after IVT was approved in this patient population in several European and non-European countries during 2018-2019.

Design: This is an observational registry study using prospectively collected data from the Safe Implementation of Treatment in Stroke (SITS) registry. Comparisons will be performed between patients treated post-approval (July 2018 to December 2021) period with those treated pre-approval (June 2015 to June 2018) period using propensity score matching (PSM).

This sub-analysis of the ePREDICE trial, investigated the prevalence and determinants of renal complications, specifically glomerular hyperfiltration, albuminuria, and reduced kidney function, in individuals with prediabetes (PD). The cohort consisted of 967 participants from diverse backgrounds across seven countries. The kidney function was evaluated using the MDRD-4 equation, and the influence of various clinical and demographic factors on renal involvement was assessed by multivariable regression models.

Massive intravascular hemolysis occurs not unfrequently in many clinical conditions. Breakdown of erythrocytes promotes the accumulation of heme-derivates in the kidney, increasing oxidative stress and cell death, thus promoting acute kidney injury (AKI). NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) is a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the kidney, however it is unknown the role of Nox4 in hemolysis and whether inhibition of this enzyme may protect from heme-mediated injury.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between inflammatory biomarkers and cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • A total of 964 patients were analyzed, measuring inflammatory markers such as TNF-R1, GDF-15, and hsCRP, to see how these relate to acute ischemic events over a follow-up period of about 5.4 years.
  • Results showed that diabetic patients had higher inflammatory marker levels and a greater incidence of cardiovascular events, with TNF-R1 identified as an independent risk factor for these events specifically in diabetic patients.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between mineral metabolism (MM) and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in patients who experienced acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
  • A total of 58 patients undergoing CR were compared with 116 control patients, revealing significant differences in hypertension prevalence and medication use.
  • Results showed that after six months, klotho levels increased significantly in CR patients, while controls experienced a decrease, suggesting a potential positive effect of CR on MM that warrants further exploration.
