Role of Avacopan on Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA)-Associated Vasculitis.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated (ANCA) vasculitis are a group of autoimmune diseases characterized by inflammation of the microvasculature, leading to life-threatening complications, including kidney disease. These diseases are associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Conventional treatment modalities have evolved towards personalized therapies intending to mitigate inflammation and minimize the adverse effects of traditional immunosuppressive agents.

Effect of Intravitreal Anti-Endothelial Growth Factor Agents on Renal Function in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction: Intravitreal administration of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors (anti-VEGF) is the treatment of choice in retinal pathology associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). We aimed to analyze the effect of intravitreal anti-VEGF administration on renal function in patients with DM2.

Methods: This is a single-center retrospective and observational study of patients with DM2 with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Monitoring of Antarctica's Fragile Vegetation Using Drone-Based Remote Sensing, Multispectral Imagery and AI.

Vegetation in East Antarctica, such as moss and lichen, vulnerable to the effects of climate change and ozone depletion, requires robust non-invasive methods to monitor its health condition. Despite the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to acquire high-resolution data for vegetation analysis in Antarctic regions through artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, the use of multispectral imagery and deep learning (DL) is quite limited. This study addresses this gap with two pivotal contributions: (1) it underscores the potential of deep learning (DL) in a field with notably limited implementations for these datasets; and (2) it introduces an innovative workflow that compares the performance between two supervised machine learning (ML) classifiers: Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and U-Net.

Rational use of eculizumab in secondary atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Background: Secondary atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (secondary aHUS) is a heterogeneous group of thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) associated with various underlying conditions. Unlike primary aHUS, there is still no hard evidence on the efficacy of complement blockade in secondary aHUS, since the two main series that investigated this subject showed discrepant results. Our work aims to reassess the efficacy of eculizumab in treating secondary aHUS.

Octogenarians with chronic kidney disease in the nephrology clinic: Progressors vs. non-progressors.

Background: The current definition of chronic kidney disease applied to patients over the age of 80 has increased the number of referrals to Nephrology. However not all of these patients may benefit from its assessment. This study aims to analyze the evolution of ≥80 years old patients referred to Nephrology.
