Freshwater ecosystems are highly biodiverse and important for livelihoods and economic development, but are under substantial stress. To date, comprehensive global assessments of extinction risk have not included any speciose groups primarily living in freshwaters. Consequently, data from predominantly terrestrial tetrapods are used to guide environmental policy and conservation prioritization, whereas recent proposals for target setting in freshwaters use abiotic factors.

In this study, we used a network analytical approach to unravel these complex interactions. Freshwater megafauna, such as sturgeons, giant catfishes, river dolphins, hippopotami, crocodylians, large turtles, and giant salamanders, have experienced severe population declines and range contractions worldwide. Although there is an increasing number of studies investigating the causes of megafauna losses in fresh waters, little attention has been paid to synthesising the impacts of megafauna on the abiotic environment and other organisms in freshwater ecosystems, and hence the consequences of losing these species. This limited understanding may impede the development of policies and actions for their conservation and restoration.

A market study on sturgeon products in the Lower Danube countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine) resulted in a total of 149 samples of caviar and meat, which we subjected to genetic-isotope analyses. The samples comprised 31 samples (21%) of illegal wild-caught origin, 17 samples (11.4%) sold in violation of CITES and EU regulations, and 47 cases (32%) of consumer deception.
