Improving our ability to monitor fragmented tropical ecosystems is a critical step in supporting the stewardship of these complex landscapes. We investigated the structural characteristics of vegetation classes in Ucayali, Peru, employing a co-production approach. The vegetation classes included three agricultural classes (mature oil palm, monocrop cacao, and agroforestry cacao plantations) and three forest regeneration classes (mature lowland forest, secondary lowland forest, and young lowland vegetation regrowth).

Using particle-in-cell simulations, we examine hot electron generation from electron plasma waves excited by stimulated Raman scattering and rescattering in the kinetic regime where the wave number times the Debye length (kλ(D)) is >/~0.3 for backscatter. We find that for laser and plasma conditions of possible relevance to experiments at the National Ignition Facility, anomalously energetic electrons can be produced through the interaction of a discrete spectrum of plasma waves generated from stimulated Raman scattering (back and forward scatter), rescatter, and the Langmuir decay of the rescatter-generated plasma waves.

Plasma-wave behavior in multiple dimensions is studied using two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We find that large-amplitude waves with kλ(D)≳0.2, where k is the wave number of the wave and λ(D) is the Debye length, localize in the transverse direction around their axis due to nonlinear, local damping caused by transiting particles.

Global miRNA expression arrays were used for analysis of 836 miRNAs in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from 21 tongue cancer patients and 8 controls. Samples had been stored for one to eleven years. Results separated tumour samples from controls, however, the largest variation was correlated to sample storage time, detectable already after one year.
