Using the NCSBN Transition to Specific Practice Competency Tool to Develop a Multiple Patient Simulation.

Because of complexities of clinical practice and limitations in the clinical setting, prelicensure nursing students may not develop competencies necessary for safe entry into practice. Multiple patient simulation (MPS) is an effective teaching strategy to gain these competencies. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing Transition to Practice Specific Competency Tool was used to assess and identify gaps in students' knowledge and skills when designing an MPS.

The Effect of Obesity on Operating Room Utilization in Breast Surgery.

Background: The current obesity epidemic is associated with increased health care costs associated with comorbidities such as diabetes and heart disease as well as postoperative complications. However, the effect of obesity on operating room (OR) utilization, especially in common breast procedures, has not been completely evaluated. Our study is the first to examine the effect of patient obesity on operative time (OPT) for common breast procedures.

Should pancreatectomy with islet cell autotransplantation in patients with chronic alcoholic pancreatitis be abandoned?

Background: Pancreatectomy or drainage has been advocated for pain due to chronic pancreatitis. Islet cell autotransplantation (IAT) may improve quality of life (QOL); optimal patient selection has not been established.

Study Design: Outcomes of 100 patients who underwent pancreatectomy with islet isolation between 2005 and 2012 were assessed by etiology (alcoholic pancreatitis [AP] 30%, and nonalcoholic pancreatitis [NAP] 70%).

During 2000 a trial performance test for individual monitoring services in Europe was organised by the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), covering whole-body beta/photon, whole-body neutron and extremity beta/photon dosimetry for both monoenergetic and simulated workplace fields. The UK National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), which supplies routine dosemeters to some 50,000 wearers in the UK and overseas, participated in this trial performance test. This paper presents the results obtained for the NRPB whole-body TLD, neutron (PADC) and extremity dosimetry services and comments on their performance in comparison with the overall results.
