Cultivated meat, the process of generating meat in vitro without sacrificing animals, is a promising alternative to the traditional practice of livestock agriculture. However, the success of this field depends on finding sustainable and economical replacements for animal-derived and expensive fetal bovine serum (FBS) that is typically used in cell culture processes. Here, we outline an effective screening process to vet the suitability of microbial lysates to support the growth of immortalized bovine satellite cells (iBSCs) and mackerel (Mack1) cells.

A key challenge facing this goal is the high-cost of recombinant albumin which is necessary in many serum-free media formulations, including a recently developed serum-free medium for bovine satellite cell (BSC) culture termed Beefy-9. Here we alter Beefy-9 by replacing recombinant albumin with rapeseed protein isolate (RPI), a bulk-protein solution obtained from agricultural waste through alkali extraction (pH 12.

Findings will inform the need for policy action to mitigate the impact of IRDs.
Methods: The costs of IRDs were estimated using a cost-of-illness methodology, based on the prevalence of IRDs in each country.
Recent research suggests that people can learn to link the control process of task switching to predictive cues so that switch costs are attenuated following informative precues of switch likelihood. However, the precise conditions that shape such contextual cuing of control are not well understood. Farooqui and Manly (2015) raised the possibility that cued task switching is more effective when cues of control demand are presented subliminally.
