Posttraumatic stiffness of proximal interphalangeal joints remains a difficult problem that severely compromises hand function. The emphasis of treatment must be on preventing the problem from developing, which begins within hours of the injury. Effective treatment involves a careful evaluation of the injury and then instituting a rational course of therapy.
