In cats, mycobacteriosis tends to present in a syndromic manner, with cases either being due to tuberculosis (TB) (in countries where TB is endemic), one of the "leprosy-like" diseases affecting the skin and subcutis, panniculitis caused by infection of subcutaneous tissues generally with rapidly growing Mycobacteria spp. or widely disseminated granulomatous disease, which is usually caused by members of the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC). Disseminated MAC disease is rare, but when it occurs, usually develops in immunocompromised hosts with defective cell-mediated immunity.

Pathogenic variants in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene were the first identified genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in 1993. This discovery enabled the development of transgenic rodent models for studying the biology of SOD1 ALS. The understanding that SOD1 ALS is driven by a toxic gain-of-function mutation has led to therapeutic strategies that aim to lower concentrations of SOD1 protein, an endeavour that has been complicated by the phenotypic heterogeneity of SOD1 ALS.

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) constitutes a large pore channel responsible for the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from apoptotic cells. Strong evidence indicates that caspase-mediated cleavage of the C-terminus promotes the opening of the Panx1 channel by unplugging the pore. However, this simple pore-plugging mechanism alone cannot account for the observation that a Panx1 construct ending before the caspase cleavage site remains closed.
