Article Synopsis
  • Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a challenging condition that causes rhythmic sounds in line with a person's heartbeat, significantly affecting their quality of life.
  • A study compared brain structures between 135 adults with PT and 135 similarly aged controls, using imaging data to assess cortical and subcortical brain volumes.
  • Results indicated PT patients had notable reductions in cortical thickness in specific brain areas and variations in volume in various brain structures, suggesting that PT may lead to neuroanatomical changes related to auditory processing and mental health.

Purpose: Brain herniation into arachnoid granulations (BHAG) of the dural venous sinuses is a recently described finding of uncertain etiology. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of BHAG in a cohort of patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT) and to clarify the physiologic and clinical implications of these lesions.

Methods: The imaging and charts of consecutive PT patients were retrospectively reviewed.

Extended tourniquet application, often associated with battlefield extremity trauma, can lead to severe ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in skeletal muscle. Particulate oxygen generators (POGs) can be directly injected into tissue to supply oxygen to attenuate the effects of I/R injury in muscle. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a sodium percarbonate (SPO)-based POG formulation in reducing ischemic damage in a rat hindlimb during tourniquet application.

We have previously demonstrated cross-sectional differences in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements of white matter myelin and gray matter in infants with or without the apolipoprotein ε4 allele, a major genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we sought to compare longitudinal MRI white matter myelin and cognitive-behavioral changes in infants and young children with and without this allele. Serial MRI and cognitive tests were obtained on 223 infants and young children, including 74 ε4 carriers and 149 non-carriers, 2-68 months of age, matched for age, gestational duration, birth weight, sex ratio, maternal age, education, and socioeconomic status.

Introduction: Multiple studies have demonstrated the benefits of intrapartum doula care, including lower risk for cesarean birth and shortened labor time for nulliparous women. However, analyses investigating the cost-effectiveness of doula care are limited. This study evaluated the potential cost-effectiveness of professional doula support during a woman's first birth in a theoretical population of US women, with all women having a second birth without doula care.
