Article Synopsis
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea increases risks during sedation in hospitals, prompting the implementation of the STOP-BANG screening to ensure proper respiratory monitoring for patients receiving sedatives, narcotics, or anxiolytics.
  • * The STOP-BANG measure was integrated into the admission process, requiring monitoring via pulse oximetry and capnography for patients scoring ≥3 who were prescribed sedatives or narcotics.
  • * An analysis of over 250,000 patients showed that after implementing the protocol, mortality rates for those on sedatives decreased and monitoring was particularly beneficial for high-risk patients with STOP-BANG scores of 5 or more.

Purpose: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is a common surgical procedure for elderly patients with proximal humerus fractures. Cement fixation of the humeral stem is considered the gold standard for this procedure. Due to the high prevalence of osteoporosis in this patient population, the risk of intraoperative fractures is increased when uncemented stems are used.

Article Synopsis
  • - New York State added CFTR gene sequencing to Cystic Fibrosis newborn screening in December 2017 to minimize false positives, leading to a higher identification of infants with inconclusive diagnoses, known as CRMS/CFSPID.
  • - An analysis of 375 screen-positive newborns from 2017 to 2020 revealed that 59.5% were classified as CRMS/CFSPID, with a majority carrying CF-related variants, but all sweat chloride test results remained below the threshold for diagnosis over 1-3 years.
  • - The findings suggest the need for updated clinical guidelines to better manage and support infants with CRMS/CFSPID, as no infants converted to a definitive CF diagnosis during

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are studying how joints and bones form, but they haven’t been able to recreate the early steps in a lab.
  • They created a special system to test how certain chemicals and movements affect the growth of stem cells over four weeks.
  • Their results showed that using a combination of movement and chemicals helped the cells develop tiny spaces that look like the early stages of joint formation.

We investigated whether developing an autoimmune disorder (AID) following a high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosis improves overall survival. This retrospective study included data from women treated for high-grade serous, endometrioid, or transitional cell ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer FIGO stage III or IV at a Swiss cantonal gynecological cancer center (2008-2023). We used Kaplan-Meier estimates and the Cox proportional hazards model using time-varying covariates for the survival function estimation.
