Objective: This project was designed to provide an overview of hot flash studies conducted over the past two decades at the Mayo Clinic and in the North Central Cancer Treatment Group.

Design: Prospective clinical trials performed by these investigators are illustrated, described, and discussed.

Results: Ten randomized, controlled (eight placebo controlled), double-blind clinical trials were conducted involving a total of 1,581 women and three placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trials involving a total of 329 men were conducted.

Purpose: This Phase II study was undertaken to define the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of docetaxel and irinotecan for the second-line treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Patients And Methods: Forty-six patients with measurable NSCLC who had relapsed after an initial response to chemotherapy or who had failed to respond to initial chemotherapy, received 130 mg/m2 of irinotecan IV over 90 minutes and 50 mg/m2 docetaxel IV over 60 minutes on Day 1 q3 weeks for 6 cycles. Dexamethasone and diphenhydramine pretreatment were given.

Seven male patients in the David T Purtilo International X-linked Lymphoproliferative Disease (XLP) Registry have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). All patients received HSCT from HLA-identical donors: sibling BM, five; unrelated BM, one; and sibling umbilical cord blood, one. Ages at time of HSCT ranged from 5 to 30 years.

We report nine children with relapsed (n = 8) or high-risk (n = 1) peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) who underwent autologous (n = 6) or allogeneic (n = 3) bone marrow transplantation (BMT). These children received transplants as part of a prospective phase I/II study of thioTEPA (TT) and total body irradiation (TBI) with escalating doses of VP-16. The median age of these patients at time of BMT was 6.

A 58-year old male with follicular small cleaved B cell lymphoma developed pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) during chemotherapy. To understand the etiology of the PRCA, we studied the effects of patient sera on the progenitor cell colony formation of normal human bone marrow cells in vitro. We demonstrated a marked inhibition of normal bone marrow progenitor cell colony formation by patient sera, but not pooled normal human sera.
