View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is now the standard management for mucinous tumors of appendiceal origin at many centers. We examined the role of expectant observation (EO) in patients who had undergone an initial resection at the time of referral to our center and who had limited residual disease.
Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients referred to Mount Sinai/Princess Margaret Hospitals, Toronto, for consideration of surgical management of peritoneal malignancy between January 1998 and December 2009.
Background: Targeted therapies elicit anticancer activity by exerting pharmacodynamic effects on specific molecular targets. Currently, there is limited use of pharmacodynamic assessment to guide drug administration in the routine oncology setting.
Methods: We developed a phosphoshift (pShift) flow cytometry-based test that measures RAF signal transduction capacity in peripheral blood cells, and evaluated it in a phase II clinical trial of oral sorafenib plus low-dose cyclophosphamide in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), in order to predict clinical course and/or guide individual dose-titration.

Right ventricular (RV) failure is characterized by an inability to pump blood into the pulmonary circulation and can often lead to hemodynamic instability. Common causes of RV failure include left ventricular (LV) failure, RV infarction, sepsis, cor pulmonale due to acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary emboli, or pulmonary hypertension. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman with no significant pulmonary or cardiac disease who presented with hypoxic respiratory failure in the setting of opioid overdose.
