Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a major cause of hospitalizations and can lead to long-term issues like chronic muscle weakness, particularly due to mitochondrial dysfunction in survivors.
  • Researchers created a mouse model of severe sepsis to explore the link between mitochondrial abnormalities and muscle weakness, using specific treatments to observe their effects.
  • Findings indicated that muscle weakness develops over time post-sepsis, correlating with increased mitochondrial damage, suggesting that targeting these mitochondrial issues could be a potential therapeutic approach.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sarcopenia, a condition involving muscle loss, is common in men with liver cirrhosis and has negative effects on health, including increasing the risk of hepatic encephalopathy (HE); androgen receptor agonists (ARAs) like LPCN 1148 show potential to address these issues but their effectiveness and safety in this demographic were previously unclear.
  • - In a phase 2 trial, men with cirrhosis and sarcopenia were given either LPCN 1148 or placebo for 24 weeks, with results indicating that those taking LPCN 1148 had a significant increase in muscle mass (measured by CT scans) and experienced fewer episodes of serious HE compared to the placebo group.

One group whose positive body image experiences remain under-explored is individuals who identify as nonbinary, gender fluid, and/or genderqueer (including other nonbinary identities). Thus, we sought to answer the questions: What does it look like to have a positive body image for a nonbinary person? and How do nonbinary persons form and maintain a positive body image? To answer these questions, we conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 15 nonbinary individuals who were assessed as having positive body image using the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015a). Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.

This study evaluated the association between the transmigration of monocyte subpopulations that contributes to atherosclerosis development, along with surrogate biomarkers of inflammation and atherosclerosis, through carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) measurements of 72 people with HIV (PWH) on suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). We found that the transmigration of intermediate monocytes was positively correlated with D-dimer and cIMT, suggesting that intermediate monocytes may have a greater propensity to promote cardiovascular disease (CVD) in PWH on ART.

Self-doping is a particular doping method that has been applied to a wide range of organic semiconductors. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the relationship between dopant structure and function. A structurally diverse series of self-n-doped perylene diimides (PDIs) is investigated to study the impact of steric encumbrance, counterion selection, and dopant/PDI tether distance on functional parameters such as doping, stability, morphology, and charge-carrier mobility.
