Article Synopsis
  • Health is influenced by mitochondrial energy transformation, which plays a crucial role in regulating various body systems that relate to resilience and disease risk throughout life.
  • The MiSBIE study aims to explore how mitochondria affect interconnected systems like neuroendocrine, immune, and cognitive functions, focusing on individuals with mitochondrial diseases.
  • This research seeks to enhance understanding of mitochondrial diseases, develop new health biomarkers, and better integrate knowledge of the connections between energy processes and overall health.

Although preoperative antibiotics are used routinely in ankle fracture surgery, there is considerable variability in postoperative antibiotic dosing regimens amongst surgeons. The aim of this study is to compare the rate of surgical site infection (SSI) in patients receiving one dose of preoperative antibiotics to patients who received more than one dose of antibiotics. A single-center Level I Trauma Center retrospective review of patients with isolated closed ankle fractures who underwent open reduction internal fixation over a 10-year period was performed.

Background: Pain in the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is very common, yet the underlying etiology remains unknown. Previous clinical research and biomechanical research has implicated stenosing flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendonitis as a possible cause. The hypothesis of this study was that treatment solely focusing on alleviating restricted FHL excursion would be beneficial in patients with hallux MTPJ pain.

Although the impact that vitamin D has on bone healing is uncertain in foot and ankle (F&A) surgery, there is support for vitamin D supplementation (2000 IU/day) with calcium (1 g/day) to promote bone healing. Although orthopedic F&A surgeons are frequently the first provider to detect the harbingers of osteoporosis by the occurrence of fragility fractures, this should trigger referral to the appropriate specialist for assessment and treatment. There is circumstantial evidence suggesting a role of hypovitaminosis D in bone marrow edema syndrome and possibly osteochondritis dissecans.
