Disease-associated serotypes of Mycobacterium intracellulare and M. avium have been isolated from 32 of 141 rainwater tanks situated in the basin of the Fitzroy River and its tributaries in central Queensland, 7 of 32 tanks situated in the hinterland of the coastal city of Rockhampton, and 2 of 32 tanks sampled repetitively in the southeastern Queensland city of Toowoomba. In vitro studies on the use of cetylpyridinium chloride as a bacterial plaque control agent.

Studies have shown that cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) containing mouthwash may in vitro inhibit artificial bacterial plaque accumulation under certain conditions. These studies, together with the findings of clinical trials, suggest that the clinical activity of CPC in partially limiting plaque accumulation depends on its adherence to cleaned enamel surfaces rather than its penetration in performed plaque.

A commercially avaiblable mouthwash, containing 0.05 per cent w/v cetylpyridinium chloride, reduced dental plaque accumulation by 30 per cent in a clinical trial when used briefly, three times a day, after meals.
