Bone healing after sliding hip screw internal fixation of intertrochanteric hip fractures is difficult to monitor with radiography. In this study, we describe and evaluate a device to non-invasively determine the loading on the screw implant as a possible qualitative indicator of bone healing. A novel load-sensing sliding hip screw (LS-SHS) was fabricated containing a radio-dense tungsten indicator rod that moves and can be measured within the screw cannulation when the screw bends under load via plain radiography.

Uneven pressure distribution within a transtibial prosthetic socket can lead to discomfort, skin degradation, and suspended prosthesis use. Current custom interfaces to improve pressure distribution are often costly, time-intensive to fabricate, or cannot be incorporated into standard socket fabrication methods. In this technical note, we describe the design and preliminary clinical evaluation of a novel transtibial prosthetic socket insert with modifiable mechanical properties, which can be incorporated into the current clinical cycle of care.

Right ventricular (RV) fibrosis is associated with RV dysfunction in a variety of RV pressure-loading conditions where RV mechanical stress is increased, but the underlying mechanisms driving RV fibrosis are incompletely understood. In pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases characterized by elevated mechanical stress and transforming growth factor - beta-1 (TGF-β1) signaling, myocardin-related transcription factor A (MRTF-A) is a mechanosensitive protein critical to driving myofibroblast transition and fibrosis. Here we investigated whether MRTF-A inhibition improves RV pro-fibrotic remodeling and function in response to a pulmonary artery banding (PAB) model of RV pressure-loading.

Anemia and renal failure are independent risk factors for perioperative stroke, prompting us to assess the combined impact of acute hemodilutional anemia and bilateral nephrectomy (2Nx) on microvascular brain Po (Po) in a rat model. Changes in Po (phosphorescence quenching) and cardiac output (CO, echocardiography) were measured in different groups of anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats (1.5% isoflurane, = 5-8/group) randomized to Sham 2Nx or 2Nx and subsequently exposed to acute hemodilutional anemia (50% estimated blood volume exchange with 6% hydroxyethyl starch) or time-based controls (no hemodilution).

Introduction: Hippotherapy is a physical therapy tool that utilizes horseback riding to improve strength, coordination, gait, and balance. These benefits may be linked to similarities in kinematics and muscle activation between horseback riding and normal human gait, but this is not well represented in the literature, especially for muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between muscle activation of horseback riding and healthy human gait.
