The Dynamics of Team Learning: Harmony and Rhythm in Teamwork Arrangements for Innovation.

Innovation teams must navigate inherent tensions between different learning activities to produce high levels of performance. Yet, we know little about how teams combine these activities-notably reflexive, experimental, vicarious, and contextual learning-most effectively over time. In this article, we integrate research on teamwork episodes with insights from music theory to develop a new theoretical perspective on team dynamics, which explains how team activities can produce harmony, dissonance, or rhythm in teamwork arrangements that lead to either positive or negative effects on overall performance.

Hospital Coding of Postoperative Ileus: A Prospective Study.

Background Postoperative ileus (POI) is among the most common complications affecting patients who undergo major abdominal surgery. Because of the high volume of major surgery and the high incidence of postoperative ileus, failure to code for this complication may have a significant impact on hospital reimbursement and quality measures. Objectives This paper investigates the magnitude of the difference between the prevalence of POI as coded in administrative data versus the prevalence based upon a prospectively applied operational definition of POI in patients undergoing intestinal resection surgery.

Post-operative Complication Rate Comparison Between Airway Surgery and Upper Airway Stimulation Using NSQIP and ADHERE.

Objective: Postoperative complication rates were compared between obstructive sleep apnea surgery (OSAS) and hypoglossal nerve upper airway stimulation (UAS).

The "Classification Pendulum" of Stage I Colorectal Cancer: A National Level Analysis of the Survival Difference Between T1 and T2 Colorectal Cancer.

Background: The eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer classifies nonmetastatic, node-negative colorectal cancers invading the submucosa (T1) and muscularis propria (T2) as stage I tumors without additional subclassification.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare survival of T1N0M0 versus T2N0M0 colorectal cancers and to investigate factors associated with decreased survival.

Design: This was an analysis of 2 large population-based data sets.

Male sex, ostomy, infection, and intravenous fluids are associated with increased risk of postoperative ileus in elective colorectal surgery.

Background: Postoperative ileus is a common and costly complication after elective colorectal surgery. Effects of intravenous fluid administration remain controversial, and the effect of ostomy construction has not been fully evaluated. Various restrictive intravenous fluid protocols may adversely affect renal function.
