Halogenated antibiotics pose a great threat to aqueous environments because of their persistent biotoxicity from carbon-halogen bonds. Electrochemical reduction (ER) is an efficient technology for dehalogenation, but it still suffers from limited efficiencies in breaking C-F bonds. Herein, we present a strategy to enhance C-F cleavage and promote detoxification by loading benchmark palladium cathodes onto boron-doped carbon.

Objective: The role of the cerebellum in cognitive function and psychiatric symptoms is poorly understood and particularly understudied in patients with cerebellar pathologies such as Chiari malformation type I (CM-I). Additionally, it is unclear if interventions targeted toward the cerebellum might impact these life-altering symptoms. The authors sought to characterize pre- and postoperative cognitive and psychiatric function in CM-I patients as evidence for targeted cerebellar treatment for some cognitive and psychiatric conditions.

Mycoremediation is a biological treatment approach that relies on fungi to transform environmental pollutants into intermediates with lower environmental burden. Basidiomycetes have commonly been used as the target fungal phylum for bioaugmentation in mycoremediation, however this phylum has been found to be unreliable when used at scale in the field. In this study, we isolated, characterized, and identified potential polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading fungal isolates from creosote-contaminated sediment in the Elizabeth River, Virginia.

In the later stages of Parkinson's disease (PD), patients often manifest levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID), compromising their quality of life. The pathophysiology underlying LID is poorly understood, and treatment options are limited. To move toward filling this treatment gap, the intrinsic and synaptic changes in striatal spiny projection neurons (SPNs) triggered by the sustained elevation of dopamine (DA) during dyskinesia were characterized using electrophysiological, pharmacological, molecular and behavioral approaches.

Circuit influences on the midbrain dopamine system are crucial to adaptive behavior and cognition. Recent developments in the study of neuropeptide systems have enabled high-resolution investigations of the intersection of neuromodulatory signals with basal ganglia circuitry, identifying the nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) endogenous opioid peptide system as a prospective regulator of striatal dopamine signaling. Using a prepronociceptin-Cre reporter mouse line, we characterized highly selective striosomal patterning of Pnoc mRNA expression in mouse dorsal striatum, reflecting the early developmental expression of Pnoc.
