Actionable genetic variants in 4,198 Scottish participants from the Orkney and Shetland founder populations and implementation of return of results.

The benefits of returning clinically actionable genetic results to participants in research cohorts are accruing, yet such a genome-first approach is challenging. Here, we describe the implementation of return of such results in two founder populations from Scotland. Between 2005 and 2015, we recruited >4,000 adults with grandparents from Orkney and Shetland into the Viking Genes research cohort.

Reliable mass production of Ganaspis kimorum (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), native to Asia, has become a significant threat to soft fruit crops globally. To develop a classical biological control program for this pest, the obligate parasitoid Ganaspis kimorum (Buffington) was approved in the United States for field release in 2021 as a biological control agent. However, challenges in mass production and maintenance of parasitoid colonies have been common.

Purification and serological detection of maize yellow mosaic virus.

Maize yellow mosaic virus (MaYMV) is an emerging polerovirus that was first reported in maize in China in 2013 but has since been reported in Africa and the Americas. Due to its novelty, no antibodies or serological diagnostics for the virus existed prior to the current study. In this study, we developed the first purification method for maize yellow mosaic virus with the goal of generating an antibody and subsequently developing diagnostic tests.

Improving access to help with poor sleep across youth mental health services: Interim implementation and clinical outcomes.

Objectives: There is a high, unmet sleep need in young people with mental health difficulties. We took a whole-system approach to improving access to sleep support across a youth mental health system (14-25 years).

Methods: We used the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation and Sustainment (EPIS) framework to develop an implementation programme (The Better Sleep Programme) incorporating two levels of training: (i) therapeutic practitioners received training and supervision in CBT for insomnia (CBTi) adapted for young people with mental health difficulties, (ii) non-therapeutic practitioners received knowledge and skills workshops.
