Background: Very preterm children are at greater risk of academic difficulties (AD). Some of them start school a year earlier than anticipated during pregnancy due to being born preterm. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between neurodevelopment, school-entry age, and AD at age seven.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how paracetamol and its metabolites behave in extremely preterm neonates during treatment for patent ductus arteriosus and to identify factors influencing variability in individual responses.
  • Thirty preterm neonates receiving paracetamol were monitored, revealing that the drug was mostly metabolized through the sulfation pathway, which decreased with gestational age, while the glucuronidation pathway increased.
  • The results showed no link between the level of drug exposure and clinical outcomes or liver function indicators, suggesting that the dosages used might already achieve optimal effectiveness for ductus closure.

The patent ductus arteriosus is a very common condition in preterm infants, and a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus increases morbidity and mortality in these vulnerable patients. However, despite numerous randomized controlled trials, there is no consensus regarding management. Medical therapy is typically offered as first-line treatment, although it yields limited success and carries the potential for severe adverse events.

When individuals are exposed to two pure tones with close frequencies presented separately in each ear, they perceive a third sound known as binaural beats (BB), characterized by a frequency equal to the difference between the two tones. Previous research has suggested that BB may influence brain activity, potentially benefiting attention and relaxation. In this study, we hypothesized that the impact of BB on cognition and EEG is linked to the spatial characteristics of the sound.

Purpose: The primary objective was to evaluate the impact of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) on mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years' corrected age (CA) in infants born before 32 weeks' gestation (WG).

Methods: We studied neurodevelopment at 2 years' CA of infants with NEC or SIP who were born before 32 WG from the EPIPAGE-2 cohort study. The primary outcome was death or the presence of moderate-to-severe motor or sensory disability defined by moderate-to-severe cerebral palsy or hearing or visual disability.
