Recently, a growing interest has been recorded in mineral content of mammalian diet, which might impair their development. Focused on the topic, we studied the effect of Al3+, Si4+, Sr2+ and Na2S on the intensity of malondialdehyde (MDA) production in vitro. MDA, as one of oxidative stress markers, was determined in rat brain homogenates in the conditions of lipid peroxidation (LP) activated by iron ions and ascorbate.

Influence of mineral water from Trenčianske Teplice (drinkable source) on lipid peroxidation processes was determined in model situations under in vitro conditions using the brain tissue. The central nervous system was selected because it is especially sensitive to the radical-induced damage. In addition, there is a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain which has a low antioxidant capacity and is relatively rich in iron ions--enhancers of lipid peroxidation processes.

Background: Owing to excessive worries regarding adverse cardiac events, hyperthermal balneotherapy for patients with coronary artery disease is underprescribed. However, very few cardiac events occur in similar heat stress during Finnish sauna bathing. Exercise testing has proven to be a safe diagnostic procedure even in survivors of myocardial infarction.

Objective: To study the role of physical fitness and hyperthermia in inducing growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) responses to exercise in physically fit and in non-trained healthy subjects.

Methods: Ten wrestlers preparing for international competition (mean age 19), and nine untrained healthy males (mean age 21), volunteered in the study. They were exposed twice to the exercise consisting of 27 min swimming, freestyle, in water of 29 or 36 degrees C, with last 3 min increased to maximal effort.

Cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to exercise in a physically fit and an untrained group of young healthy subjects were compared to study the significance of physical fitness for performance in a discipline for which the athletes were not trained. Ten wrestlers of national rank prepared for an international competition (age 18 years) and 9 untrained healthy males (age 21 years). Exercise consisted of 27-min swimming, freestyle, in water of 29 degrees C, with last 3 min increased to maximal effort.
