Challenges and Opportunities in the Adoption of p-TIPS for Acute Variceal Bleeding: Insights from a US Tertiary Center.

Background And Aims: Since the overwhelmingly positive results of the 'early use of TIPS' published in 2010, studies in Europe and Asia have confirmed early/pre-emptive transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (p-TIPS) in high-risk patients with acute variceal bleed (AVB) reduces treatment failure and mortality compared to standard of care (SOC). There are no studies evaluating p-TIPS in a US cohort.

Methods: A review of patients with cirrhosis from June 2010 to June 2020 with AVB was conducted from a single large US center.

BRIVA-ONE study: 12-month outcomes of brivaracetam monotherapy in clinical practice.

Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness and tolerability of brivaracetam (BRV) monotherapy in a large series of patients with epilepsy.

Method: This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational, non-interventional study in 24 hospitals across Spain. Patients aged ≥18 years who started on BRV monotherapy, either as first-line or following conversion, at least 1 year before database closure were included.

Comparative analysis of central versus peripheral visual field test grids in the diagnosis of glaucoma.

Accumulating evidence has recognised central visual field defects (CVFDs) as a common feature of glaucoma. Current glaucoma screening guidelines include peripherally biased perimetry (24-2 protocols), but test grids exist to test the integrity of the central visual field (10-2 protocols). However, the added benefit of incorporating central visual field assessments alongside peripheral-biased testing grids remains unclear.

RAPID ALKALINIZATION FACTOR 22 is a key modulator of the root hair growth responses to fungal ethylene emissions in Arabidopsis.

In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh), exposure to volatile compounds (VCs) emitted by Penicillium aurantiogriseum promotes root hair (RH) proliferation and hyper-elongation through mechanisms involving ethylene, auxin, and photosynthesis signaling. In addition, this treatment enhances the levels of the small signaling peptide RAPID ALKALINIZATION FACTOR 22 (RALF22).

Current challenges for plant biology research in the Global South.

In an attempt to address the large inequities faced by the plant biology communities from the Global South (i.e. countries located around the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere) at international conferences, this Viewpoint is the reflexive thinking arising from the concurrent session titled 'Arabidopsis and its translational research in the Global South' organized at the International Conference of Arabidopsis Research 2023 (ICAR 2023) in Chiba, Japan in June 2023.
