Physiological resilience of pink salmon to naturally occurring ocean acidification.

Pacific salmon stocks are in decline with climate change named as a contributing factor. The North Pacific coast of British Columbia is characterized by strong temporal and spatial heterogeneity in ocean conditions with upwelling events elevating CO levels up to 10-fold those of pre-industrial global averages. Early life stages of pink salmon have been shown to be affected by these CO levels, and juveniles naturally migrate through regions of high CO during the energetically costly phase of smoltification.

Surveillance of tuberculosis (TB) cases attributable to relapse or reinfection in London, 2002-2015.

Recurrence of TB in an individual can occur due to relapse of the same strain or reinfection by a different strain. The contribution of reinfection and relapse to TB incidence, and the factors associated with each are unknown. We aimed to quantify and describe cases attributable to relapse or reinfection, and identify associated risk factors in order to reduce recurrence.

Large outbreak of isoniazid-monoresistant tuberculosis in London, 1995 to 2006: case-control study and recommendations.

We conducted a case–control study to examine risk factors for isoniazid-monoresistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in an ongoing outbreak in London. Cases were defined as individuals with an isoniazid-monoresistant strain diagnosed from 1995 to the third quarter of 2006 with an indistinguishable restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) or mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit (MIRU)-variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) pattern who were resident in or had epidemiological links with London. Controls were all other individuals reported with tuberculosis to the Health Protection Agency London regional epidemiology unit or the HPA London TB Register during 2000 to 2005.

Biomedical research has undergone a major shift in emphasis over the past decade from characterizing the genomes of organisms to characterizing their proteomes. The high-throughput approaches that were successfully applied to sequencing of genomes, such as miniaturization and automation, have been adapted for high-throughput cloning and protein production. High-throughput platforms allow for a multi-construct, multi-parallel approach to expression optimization and construct evaluation.

Predictors of failure to complete tuberculosis treatment in London, 2003-2006.

Setting: London, 2003-2006.

Objectives: To investigate tuberculosis (TB) treatment completion failure in London and associated risk factors during 2003-2006.

Design: Cross-sectional analysis of treatment outcome and other explanatory variables in a cohort of TB patients reported to the London TB Register from 2003 to 2006.
