Identification and Characterization of Novel Serpentoviruses in Viperid and Elapid Snakes.

Viruses in the subfamily (order , family ) can cause significant morbidity and mortality in captive snakes, but documented infections have been limited to snakes of the , , , and families. Infections can either be subclinical or associated with oral and/or respiratory disease. Beginning in June 2019, a population of over 150 confiscated snakes was screened for serpentovirus as part of a quarantine disease investigation.

Maternal Innate Immune Reprogramming After Complicated Pregnancy.

Problem: Preeclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR) are often associated with maternal inflammation and an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease in the affected mothers. The mechanism responsible for this increased risk of subsequent disease may involve reprogramming of innate immune cells, characterized by epigenetic modifications.

Method Of Study: Circulating monocytes from women with PE, FGR, or uncomplicated pregnancies (control) were isolated before labor.

Association of Histone H3 Trimethylation in Circulating Monocytes with Lack of Early Recurrence in Patients with Bladder Cancer following BCG Induction Therapy.

Background: The mode of action of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in the treatment of patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is incompletely understood, but recent studies support an association between BCG-induced trained immunity in circulating monocytes and disease-free survival.

Objective: We compared epigenetic profiles in monocytes from NMIBC patients with early disease recurrence with those from recurrence-free patients.

Methods: We conducted chromatin immunoprecipitation and DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) on monocytes from seven patients treated with BCG (four with early recurrences and three recurrence-free after one year) to determine genome-wide distribution and abundance of histone 3 lysine 4 trimethylation (H3K4me3) prior to and after five weeks of induction therapy.

Portal Vein Doppler Is a Sensitive Marker for Evaluating Venous Congestion in End-Stage Kidney Disease.

Introduction: Determining ultrafiltration volume in patients undergoing intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) is an essential component in the assessment and management of volume status. Venous excess ultrasound (VExUS) is a novel tool used to quantify the severity of venous congestion at the bedside. Given the high prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), venous Doppler could represent a useful tool to monitor decongestion in these patients.

Structural Plasticity of GABAergic Pallidothalamic Terminals in MPTP-Treated Parkinsonian Monkeys: A 3D Electron Microscopic Analysis.

The internal globus pallidus (GPi) is a major source of tonic GABAergic inhibition to the motor thalamus. In parkinsonism, the firing rate of GPi neurons is increased, and their pattern switches from a tonic to a burst mode, two pathophysiological changes associated with increased GABAergic pallidothalamic activity. In this study, we used high-resolution 3D electron microscopy to demonstrate that GPi terminals in the parvocellular ventral anterior nucleus (VApc) and the centromedian nucleus (CM), the two main GPi-recipient motor thalamic nuclei in monkeys, undergo significant morphometric changes in parkinsonian monkeys including (1) increased terminal volume in both nuclei; (2) increased surface area of synapses in both nuclei; (3) increased number of synapses/GPi terminals in the CM, but not VApc; and (4) increased total volume, but not number, of mitochondria/terminals in both nuclei.
