Objective: To report on the phenomenon of spurious hypophosphatemia associated with multiple myeloma.

Methods: A case report is presented, and the pertinent published literature is reviewed. The mechanisms by which multiple myeloma can cause both true and false hypophosphatemia are discussed, as are methods by which the important distinction between these conditions can be made.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and hypertension in primary hyperparathyroidism.

To evaluate the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in the hypertension associated with primary hyperparathyroidism, we measured plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentration before and after maneuvers to suppress and stimulate this system in 11 hypertensive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. We also measured plasma or urinary norepinephrine concentration to examine the role of catecholamines in the hypertension. The results were compared with an age- and race-matched control population.
