The European Union, as delineated in Regulation (EU) 2020/741, sets forth minimum criteria for the reuse of wastewater. Directive 86/278/CEE sets the regulations for the reuse of sewage sludge in agriculture. This study aimed to investigate the treated water derived from a pilot plant situated in Granada, Spain, that utilizes membrane bioreactor technology to process real urban wastewater with the quality standards necessary for agricultural reuse.

Article Synopsis
  • In September 2022, Spain faced a Sheep pox virus outbreak in sheep, which had not been seen in over 50 years, affecting 30 farms in two regions.
  • To tackle the outbreak, experts conducted careful health checks and tests, confirming the virus in many suspected farms, even when not all sheep showed clear signs of illness.
  • Despite testing thousands of sheep for the virus, only a few cases were found before symptoms appeared, showing the need for careful monitoring and better testing methods to manage such outbreaks.

Background: Ibrexafungerp (SCY-078) is the newest oral and intravenous antifungal drug with broad activity, currently undergoing clinical trials for invasive candidiasis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the activity of ibrexafungerp and comparators against a collection of 434 European blood isolates of .

Methods: Ibrexafungerp, caspofungin, fluconazole, and micafungin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were collected from 12 European laboratories for 434 blood isolates, including 163 , 108 , 60 , 40 , 29 , 20 , 6 , 2 , 2 , and 1 isolate each of , , and .

Cyp51 contribution to azole resistance has been broadly studied and characterized in , whereas it remains poorly investigated in other clinically relevant species of the genus, such as those of section In this work, we aimed to analyze the impact of genes ( and ) on the voriconazole (VRC) response and resistance of and We generated CRISPR-Cas9 and knock-out mutants from strains with different genetic backgrounds and diverse patterns of azole susceptibility. Single gene deletions of genes resulted in 2 to 16-fold decrease of the VRC Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values, which were below the VRC Epidemiological Cutoff Value (ECV) established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) irrespective of their parental strains susceptibilities. Gene expression studies in the tested species confirmed that participates more actively than in the transcriptional response of azole stress.

Mucolares are an ancient group of fungi encompassing the causal agents for the lethal infection mucormycosis. The high lethality rates, the emerging character of this disease, and the broad antifungal resistance of its causal agents are mucormycosis features that are alarming clinicians and researchers. Thus, the research field around mucormycosis is currently focused on finding specific weaknesses and targets in Mucorales for developing new treatments.
